I have used other scent products in the past and younger immature deer have spooked upon smelling the scent. Why does this happen?
Scott Helms, Youngstown, OH |
Using dominant buck scent during the peak of the rut may spook younger, immature deer. At this time of the season, the pecking orders have been established and the younger deer may not want to risk a possible fight. Try using Dominant Buck scent early in the season and Doe-n-Heat scent during the peak of the rut |
Can I use Non-Typical Scents on decoys?
Josh Kempker, Henley, MO |
Absolutely! Decoying and using scent is extremely effective. First, you must ensure that the decoy is free of any foreign odor by using a scent killer. Then, apply Non-Typical Scents directly to the backside of the decoy. We recommend using a decoy in an open area, such as a field’s edge. Using this tactic serves a dual purpose: 1) Big bucks will have a visual yet won’t be alarmed and 2) Hunters can lure deer from great distances (especially when rattling and grunting). Always remember to be extremely patient when using decoys! |
Where is the best placement for Non-Typical Scents Gel applications?
Mike Riely, Ramsey, MN |
Apply gel scents above licking branches over breeding scrapes or on buck rubs. |
I have found an area where a big buck has been bedding but I have never seen him. Why?
John Davis, Collinsville, IL |
Most likely, you are spooking him prior to getting to your stand. We advise you to stay at least 100 yards or more away from his bedding area. Pump scent on your way to your stand in order to cover your human scent. If the deer hears something in the distance, he will travel to the downwind side of the noise. You must atomize deer scent into the air at that point. |
How much scent should I use on a hunt?
Shawn Gibson, Topeka, KS |
A whitetail deer may urinate between 6 and 12 ounces at a time, which is quite a large amount. That being said, you should also use a large amount of scent attractant. Disperse at least 1 to 2 ounces of scent in the air using an atomizer pump in route to your stand in addition to using scent applied to your Scent Spider. |
What can I do to increase my odds of having a successful hunt on the first day of bow season?
Joseph Rocsberg, Houston, TX |
Stage the area that you will hunt at least 3-4 days prior to opening day. Make a mock scrape, apply scent to the area, and disperse scent into the air. Do not return to the site until opening day. This will not only draw the deer in, but it will hold them in the area in anticipation of a new arrival. On opening day, start off with a few light contact grunts. At this time of the year, deer take their time in getting where they want to go, so be patient! Wait at least an hour between grunt callings. |
